Feature Friday: Saga Design + Build

Feature Friday: Saga Design + Build

It’s another Friday and this week we decided to dive a little deeper into one of our favorite local peeps. Chase of Saga Design + Build is a good friend and I have enjoyed getting to know him through the design circle in the Gorge. Not only is he just a really good human being, he has an awesome family and a pretty kick-ass wife if you ask me. Chase brings a level of thoughtfulness to his projects that I have yet to see from other Architects in the area and his designs reflect that. He then carries that same humble approach into his builds and relies on his all star team to execute his vision in the field. If you are considering going the custom home route, I would definitely recommend you vet him and his team for your project.

I asked Chase to answer a few simple questions so you could get to know him a bit more and thought I’d share those with you. Take a look!

If you were not an Architect/Builder, what would you be doing?

Building furniture and making mixed media sculpture.

What is your favorite way to spend your free/weekend time?

Outside with my family, usually fly fishing, mushrooming, hiking or floating a river.

What made you get into Architecture?

I grew up building houses for my Dad, who had a small construction company, so developed an interest in construction early. In my early career, I parlayed my building experience into working in the green building/sustainability field, but grew dissatisfied with how the industry was so statistically focused and energy efficiency/ math based. I realized that I wanted to pursue design/construction and sustainability in building from a very people focused perspective and felt that Architecture provided the best avenue to pursue that interest.

Why did you decide to also take on the build side of things?

Getting back into construction was a natural step based on my background in building, but it is also an outgrowth of what I see as a need in the industry for design and construction to be more closely coordinated. In a design/build project the values and interests of the team are much more closely aligned and all stakeholders in the project can work towards the same goals.

Who is your ideal client?

We enjoy working with a wide variety of clients, and every project is different (all in interesting and wonderful ways). In general, we are drawn to clients that feel a strong sense of place for the property that they want to build on and for the Columbia River Gorge and our community. We love working with people who share our appreciation for highly crafted work and homes that are integrated into the places, people and environments for which they are built.
