2023 Design Trend

2023 DESIGN TRENDS

The design pendulum is swinging a bit to bring in more color and formality.  There’s a craving for a bit of excess after the covid-era sweatpants. We’ve been living through tumultuous time and in 2023 you’ll see design elements that calm your senses and are kind to the planet.  Antiques, thrift shop treasures, and other things that were made to last are making a comeback which are a more environmentally conscious way to furnish and decorate.  The Modern Farmhouse aesthetic is becoming dated and natural furnishings and décor that bring in the outdoors will be a popular new style.

You’ll be seeing more and more design trends emerging.  Here are a few that we are excited about

Minimal Maximalism or Maximal Minimalism

An oxymoron, yes, but definitely an emerging trend that you'll definitely be seeing in 2023. Minimal Maximalism is combining the long-standing Minimalist trend with Maximalism. This can go both ways. If you have a space with a lot of ornamental features, bring in some minimalism by painting the room a crisp white and add in elements like simple window treatments, furniture with clean lines, and more modern and simple art. the flip side is Maximal Minimalism where you have a minimalist style home and bring in fun and colorful elements like bold patterned rugs, a gallery wall with a variety of framed artwork, pops of color with throw pillows and window coverings.

Natural Materials

Natural materials and objects that bring the outdoors in. Not only is this a beautiful trend, but it is also sustainable. Move out the manufactured acrylics to make room for a tree stump end table or live edge console. Natural wood items finished with Pure Tung Oil. Metal pieces can be warm and beautiful compliments to natural wood furnishings. Ground the space with a rug made from natural materials like wool, jute, and cotton.

Dark Academia

Embrace a moody atmosphere with dark tones. Dark greens, blues, and reds have taken favor over black. Dark Academia draws from the disciplines of history, literature, and philosophy while channeling inspiration from gothic themes and hints of Hogwarts.

Natural Wood Grain Cabinetry

Cabinetmakers are getting very creative with wood door styles and finishes. Although it is a bit more of an investment to have cabinets made of solid wood vs. veneer, you will have a higher quality product and the ability to have interesting details as seen in this beautiful reeded inset door by Wood-Mode Cabinet. The reeded style is showing up a lot as seen on the Willow Teak Vanity by Rejuvenation and the Luxor Armoire.

Boucle and Sherpa

Boucle is the French word for curly. This loopy fabric on an accent chair or throw pillows adds depth, class, and a bit of whimsy. Sherpa is a fluffy knit fabric that resembles sheepskin. It is super soft and cozy. Don’t overdo it on these warm and fuzzy fabrics. Boucle and sherpa pieces are beautiful as accents in a minimalist space.

Cheers!
