Balancing Continuity and Individuality
HOW TO MAKE A HOUSE HAVE CONTINUITY WHILE STILL ALLOWING INDIVIDUALITY IN EACH ROOM
We get it, it’s hard to know how to add personality from space to space without going overboard. Here are our tips and tricks for how to walk the line and maintain the perfect balance:
Consistent Colors
This can be entire walls in one room and to create a visual connection in another room, you can bring in the same color in artwork, furnishings, decorative accessories, drapery, or wallcoverings. There’s really no limit to the amount of colors, just be sure to have colors that work together.
Keep the color of doors and trim work the same throughout the house. You can have fun by painting the doors and trim inside special rooms—like a child’s room or a powder room—a different color, but the main areas should be the same. It is also important to keep the style of the trim work consistent throughout.
Similar Flooring
An excellent way to have continuity is to have the same flooring throughout the main areas of your home; especially in spaces that are open to each other. If you need to have different flooring in a space that is open to another, pick a wall color for both spaces that coordinates with both flooring types. Coordinating rugs can pull things together, too!
Matching Finishes
Be sure to match fixture finishes throughout the home; especially in open spaces. For example, if you have a kitchen that is open to a living space, you can match the fixture and hardware finishes that are in the kitchen to decorative accessories, light fixtures, etc. in the adjacent living space(s). This is not to say that the fixture and hardware finishes need to match in the kitchen, but be sure to bring one or both finishes into adjacent spaces.
Different Styles
It adds personality to incorporate a balance of old and new furnishings and accessories. If you have a mix in one room, be sure to carry one or both styles into other rooms. An eclectic mix of pieces, such as a modern side table next to a traditional chair across from a modern sofa which sits in front of an antique console table is sophisticated and fun. Create cohesiveness by continuing this type of mix throughout the home.
Cheers!
