Making a Mood Board
Making a Mood Board
Hey y'all! Hannah here. I wanted to take a quick minute to talk about what goes behind the scenes here at Strucksured. Today we're sharing a bit about what goes into making a mood board. This could be for clients or just for inspiration here in the office.
1) Start with Inspiration
We are constantly keeping up with what new items are coming out as far as materials, furniture and fixtures. So often what we'll do is go through a fat stack of our magazines and cut out some of our favorite items to start getting a sense of aesthetic. This is one of my favorite parts.
2) Material Selection
If there's a client inspo board we're working off of, we'll have that open and start to go through our sample bins to pick materials that jive with the aesthetic. These can go hand in hand with the picture cutouts. It could be Choose images, textures, patterns, color swatches, and material samples that best represent the overall aesthetic.
If there isn't a style in mind, and we are just creating inspiration for fun, this step is much more playful. We'll pull out different materials and start experimenting with what starts to feel good together. It's kind of like making an art composition.
3) Arrange and Organize
After that we'll arrange different elements on a physical or digital board. In our office we love being hands-on, so you'll see us pin up sketches, cutouts, and actual materials to our pin boards. If we want to have larger pieces like tile or flooring in the mix we will lay everything out on the conference table like a thanksgiving spread.
4)Add Text and Labels
When working on rooms or multiple projects, we will label different areas with sticky notes. On a digital mood board, each room will have its own page. Once items are approved and selected, we will tag each material on the back with the project name and room name. A new toy in the office has been our Niimbot, it's a mini label maker hooked up to an app that you can edit right from your phone. It makes labeling samples a breeze!
5) Present to Client or Team
From there it gets presented to the client, or we enjoy it in the office for a few weeks as the rest of us draw inspiration from it.
Try it out sometime for yourself! It's a great time!
